THE HOLY SPIRIT AT WORK
Jim had been independent, a loner all of his 80 years. Former World War II tail gunner in the Air Force and now retired semi truck driver, he now stood before a Kairos Instructional gathering to share his farewell.
Devoted to God, Jim had been determined to be an effective member of the weekend team. But finding a place on that team was awkward. Frail and weak from age and infirmities, he did not have the stamina needed for the long days as a table worker. His health and independent style often had him arriving and leaving the unit on his own schedule. He always drove alone. In his church he had been persistent in obtaining signers for the prayer chain and bakers of cookies.
For the weekend he accepted a role as Assistant Chapel Coordinator, a role that kept him on the team, but with nominal direct contact with the participants. So he had observed when he could; heard their testimonies; watched as they were transformed throughout the weekend. And Jim was transformed as well.
Now, at the Instructional, Jim rose and asserted, “This will be my last time with you. I have found that I can’t handle the long and demanding days of Kairos but I want to share a thought.” He held up a well-worn pocket New Testament and Psalms. “I have had this since 1943. I call it my survival guide. Look, “ he pointed out, “how it has this list of problems and tells you where to find the answers in the Bible.” He recited a few examples such as fear, pain and doubt and the Bible verses to which they referred. “Carry one of these in your pocket at all times,” he exhorted.
Then, somewhat emotionally, Jim closed with, “I will never forget you.”
Immediately, all 40 inmates in the room gathered around Jim, placed their hands on him, and offered a prayer for his safety, health, and guidance.
Jim will never forget. Neither will the inmates.
